WINTER 2006

MEET ART ON THE HILL

Kimball Hill turned farmland into affordable housing for returning World War II veterans. His son David and daughter-in-law Diane carry on the Hill family’s commitment to community concerns.

This issue of SPOTLIGHTS is dedicated to the Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the City of Rolling Meadows. The Northwest Cultural Council and the City of Rolling Meadows created a wonderful event for Rolling Meadows citizens on September 10, 2005.

Executive Director’s Report

Dear Friends of the Arts,

[Image]We enthusiastically welcome Diane Hill to the Council’s Board of Directors. Diane is recently retired from Northwestern University where she served for 32 years as senior lecturer, author and clinical supervisor in speech and language pathology. She was a charter member and served as chair of the Specialty Board on Fluency Disorders. Her current memberships include: Leadership Committee of the Fund for Leaders in Mission of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Northwest Community Hospital’s Board of Directors, and the Harper Community College Educational Foundation.

It was a great pleasure to join with the City of Rolling Meadows to celebrate the founding of this wonderful city, and to have the opportunity to honor David Hill. David has been a supporter both intellectually and financially of this wonderful arts council.

In the devastation caused by hurricanes and floods in our country, and a tsunami in Asia, the recent results of the hurricane in Guatemala have been to some extent overlooked. Hurricane Stan caused irreparable floods, mudslides, loss of crops, and suffering. Our knowledge of the Mayan people has been heightened since we exhibited Winifred Godfrey’s Mayan Procession in 2000 at our galleries.  Donations to the Relief Fund for MayaWorks’ artisans impacted by Hurricane Stan, can be made by check to MayaWorks at 4421 N. Malden, 3N, Chicago, IL 60640 or online to the secure website: www.mayaworks.org.

As we go to press, the works for the Second Annual Visual and Poetry Competition, My Cultural Heritage, are being installed. It will be exciting to share the names, images and poems of the winners in the next issue of SPOTLIGHTS.

Please mark your calendars and attend the receptions for the January, February and March exhibits at the Kimball Hill and NWCC galleries.

The Portrait in Print, a portion of a collection of “original” fine art prints, donated by Mary and Charles Liebman to McHenry County College, will be on display at the Kimball Hill and Northwest Cultural Council galleries from January 19 to February 16, 2006.

The works are a series of portraits that offer an outstanding history of visual artists, humanitarians, writers, composers, musicians, political activists and others within the realm of the humanities. A reception will take place at the galleries on Saturday, February 4, 2006, 1-3 pm.

Icons and Altars will be on display from March 7-28, 2006. It is the work of a group of Chicago area women artists, called Twenty Two on View, who became friends and allies over 35 years ago. The group meets monthly to share their vision of art, experience art encounters together, discuss the development of art and further enhance their skills as artists. A reception will take place at the galleries on Sunday, March 19, 1-3 pm.

Our Board of Directors look forward to greeting you at the receptions for our new exhibitions.

Sincerely,

Kathy Umlauf
